Software

Being a software developer probably makes me quite unique in that I not only take the image but 90% of the software I use to process it was written by me!

Here's what I use:

Andy's Raw Converter

This tool can convert most RAW formats and uses the Canon SDK for Canon RAW development. It also features almost every post processing option that I need, with the exception of Noise Reduction. It can also produce images ready for processing in HDR software.

Image-Web-Ready

Another home-brew, this takes the final output of my Raw Converter and produces an image suitable for posting on the web - it sharpens, resizes, adds a frame and a copyright message.

Neat Image

Noise removal is a specialist task, so I use Neat Image. I rarely shoot at anything other than ISO 100, so this rarely gets used. When it's needed, it's priceless. I've also used Noise Ninja and the results are about the same. However, Neat Image can be called directly from my raw converter, which makes using it seamless.

Panorama Factory

Another specialist product - a really great program for stitching images together.

Photomatix Pro

Occasionally, a software product really excites me. This is one of them! For full details, see the HDR article, but I consider this to be one the essential software packages for digital photography, especially if you shoot Canon EOS RAW format.

Non-photographic software

XsitePro

I use XsitePro to build basic websites - true, it's primarily aimed at the affiliate marketer who has his own or someone else's product to sell. But for a non-commercial site such as this one, it makes building and maintaining the site a breeze.

Coppermine

I use Coppermine for the web galleries on this site. I prefer it to HTML web gallery generators, as the galleries can be maintained online, using a web browser. The results look good and it's very configurable. It can take some time to get all the descriptions typed in, but it's worth it. It's also free, which is a big benefit.
